Understanding Ratios

The carbon-to-nitrogen ratio indicates the balance between energy sources and protein sources for microbial activity. Optimal ratios typically fall between 25:1 and 30:1, providing sufficient energy while maintaining adequate nitrogen for microbial growth.

Ratios that are too high (above 35:1) indicate excess carbon, which slows decomposition. Ratios that are too low (below 20:1) indicate excess nitrogen, which can lead to ammonia production and odor issues.
